My Rainbow Baby Story on Scary Mommy

Today my third piece, I Love Calling My Daughter a “Rainbow Baby”, appears on Scary Mommy. Inspired by an article I recently saw written by a woman who dislikes the term “Rainbow Baby” for her own child, I was compelled to share why the term for me is filled with love, respect, and is revered in this household. It is a term held to the highest of standards, to the most special of children, and to the most beautiful imagery. It denotes how while our daughter Evelyn appears to be our only child, and to any stranger she will always be an only child, she, in fact, has a sister, a brother, and one other sibling whose gender we never even knew. Calling Evelyn our Rainbow Baby does not imply that the others were horrible storms we wished we never encountered. It does not put down the importance of our other pregnancies nor does it demean our love for each baby. It honors all our babies, living and not. It is a beautiful way to remember what we have both past and present.

It is with great excitement that I pass along my Scary Mommy piece. Whether you have your own rainbow baby, want to learn more about what it means, or just want to feel the beauty, I encourage everyone to read, share, and experience the storm with me. It is the only way to really enjoy the rainbow.
